Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is Amniotic Doctors a medical provider?
No. Amniotic Doctors is an educational website and directory. We explain amniotic products in plain English and help you find independent licensed providers. Only a licensed clinician who has evaluated you can say whether any treatment is appropriate.
Are amniotic injections FDA-approved?
Generally, no. The FDA regulates amniotic and other birth-tissue products, and most injectable amniotic or umbilical products marketed for joints, pain or 'regeneration' are not FDA-approved for those uses. The FDA has issued public warnings about unapproved regenerative products. Ask any provider exactly what product they use and its FDA status.
Do amniotic products contain stem cells?
Most amniotic products are processed in ways that leave no living stem cells, so claims of 'stem cell therapy' from amniotic products deserve skepticism. Ask the provider what the product is and what the manufacturer says it contains.
What are amniotic products used for?
Amniotic membrane has an established role as a covering for chronic wounds and on the surface of the eye. Uses such as injections for knees, backs, tendons or hair are more experimental and generally not FDA-approved.
Will insurance or Medicare cover amniotic treatment?
Coverage depends on the use. Some amniotic wound grafts (skin substitutes) can be covered when coverage rules are met, while injections for joints or pain are usually not covered. Ask the provider and your insurer before treatment.
How do providers receive referrals?
Licensed providers can list for free, or reserve an exclusive referral territory — a ZIP code, a state, or the whole country — so that patients in that area who ask for help are connected to them.
What should I ask before getting an amniotic treatment?
Ask what product will be used and its FDA status, which tissue bank supplied it, what evidence supports it for your condition, what the risks and alternatives are, and the full cost. A good provider will answer clearly and won't pressure you.
